Research and Evaluation

Collect and analyze data, evaluate programs and review the literature behind our JCVI research, to the standard of ethical, reproducible research.

We The Revolt publishes research because the young people we serve deserve policy built on evidence rather than assumption. Interns on this track support program evaluation and our continuing research on Juvenile Community Violence Intervention (JCVI). The work follows the standards of ethical human-subjects research even where no institutional review board requires it: informed consent, minimal risk, de-identification, secure storage, and honest reporting of findings, including findings that cut against our own interests.

What we need

  • Data collection: gather and document public data on juvenile detention, charges, firearm violence and program eligibility, with a source log for every figure.
  • Program evaluation: help design surveys, attendance and outcome measures, and analyze program data under supervision.
  • Literature reviews: search, screen and synthesize peer-reviewed and agency literature using a documented search strategy.
  • JCVI research support: verify citations, update data tables, check figures against their sources and document limitations.
  • Data stewardship: maintain de-identified datasets, codebooks and analysis files so that every result can be reproduced.

What we expect from you

  • Completed coursework in research methods and working proficiency in a statistical tool such as R, Stata, SPSS or Python.
  • Human-subjects ethics consistent with IRB practice. Interns do not collect identifiable data from minors, and any data involving participants is de-identified and handled under a protocol approved by your supervisor.
  • Strict confidentiality of program records, consistent with FERPA, juvenile record protections and our data policies.
  • Intellectual honesty. Report what the data shows, state limitations plainly, and never adjust a finding to fit a conclusion.
  • Careful records of your sources, methods and analytic decisions.

What you will gain

  • Applied research experience on a live policy question.
  • Acknowledgment in published We The Revolt research where your contribution is substantive.
  • Experience in evaluation design and reproducible analysis.
  • A written evaluation at the close of the term and, on successful completion, a professional reference from your supervisor.

Deliverables

  • A documented literature review or evidence brief on an assigned question.
  • A reproducible analysis: cleaned dataset, codebook, analysis script and a short methods note.
  • A citation and data verification log for an assigned piece of our JCVI research.
  • A final presentation of findings to staff.
