Communications and Digital Storytelling

Write, design and publish the story of our work across social media, email and the web, accurately and with consent.

Communications at We The Revolt is an act of stewardship. The stories we tell belong first to the people who lived them. Interns on this track write, design and publish across social media, email and the web. They learn to tell the truth well: specific, vivid and accurate, without exploiting anyone's pain and without exaggerating our part in someone's story.

Communications Director
Open to
Undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students and recent graduates in communications, journalism, English, marketing, graphic design, digital media or a related field. A portfolio or writing sample is expected.
Academic credit
Available with your school's approval. We complete the learning agreements, site supervisor forms and evaluations your program requires.
Compensation
Unpaid. Academic credit and stipends where funded.
Screening
Interview and two references.

What we need

  • Social media: draft, schedule and report on posts and stories that follow our voice and content standards.
  • Writing: draft articles, newsletters, program updates and short profiles for staff review.
  • Design: produce graphics and simple layouts within our brand system.
  • Story gathering: with staff, collect stories and photographs from programs with documented consent.
  • Analytics: track reach and engagement, and recommend what to keep and what to stop.

What we expect from you

  • Strong writing and attention to detail. Facts are checked, names are spelled correctly and claims match the record.
  • Consent and dignity in every story: no identifying image or detail of a minor, a victim or anyone who has not given written permission.
  • Working knowledge of common design and scheduling tools.
  • Confidentiality of unpublished material and internal information.
  • Openness to editing. Drafts improve through revision.

What you will gain

  • Published work, bylined where appropriate, and portfolio pieces with permission.
  • Experience running communications for a mission-driven organization.
  • Training in ethical storytelling and consent practice.
  • A written evaluation at the close of the term and, on successful completion, a professional reference from your supervisor.

Deliverables

  • A month of planned and scheduled social content, with a results summary.
  • At least three published written pieces.
  • A set of designed templates for recurring content.
  • A channel audit with recommendations.
