Paul does not tell us to stop being angry. "Be ye angry" is a command before it is a warning. There are things in this world that ought to make a Christian angry: a twelve-year-old held in a cell, a family evicted so someone can flip the house, a man who did his time and still cannot get hired. If none of that stirs you, the problem is not your temper. It is your love.

Then comes the warning. "Sin not." And then a strange line about the devil. The word Paul uses for "place" is topos, a foothold, a piece of ground. Unprocessed anger gives the enemy real estate in your soul.

Here is how that happens. Anger is meant to be a signal that says something is wrong and needs to be made right. When we hold onto it past sundown, it stops being a signal and becomes an identity. We start to need the injustice, because without it we would not know who we are. We need enemies. Our anger at what was done to us gets dressed up as a cause, and the cause becomes a place to keep a wound we never let God touch.

Our culture has turned this into an industry. Outrage keeps people scrolling, so platforms are designed to keep us angry and lonely together. Movements that started in real pain can harden into tribes that cannot tell their friends from their foes. The justice we are chasing slips away while the anger stays.

Look at Jesus in Mark 3. A man with a withered hand stands in the synagogue, and religious leaders watch to see if Jesus will heal on the Sabbath so they can accuse Him. Mark says Jesus "looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts." He was angry and grieving in the same moment. Then He healed the man.
