Film and Media

Help produce, edit and steward Hip Hop Hope, Normalized and The Ritual of Manhood, with the ethics that filming people at hard moments demands.

We The Revolt helps make films with production partners because some stories have to be seen to be understood. Hip Hop Hope, Normalized and The Ritual of Manhood carry the voices of young people, families and returning citizens to audiences who would otherwise never hear them. Interns on this track work in production, post-production and archiving. The standard is the same at every stage: the people on camera are not material. Many of them are young, and many carry trauma. Consent is informed, documented and revisitable, and nothing is released without it.

What we need

  • Production assistance on shoot days: equipment, call sheets, location logistics and on-set support.
  • Release management: prepare, explain and file appearance and location releases, including written parent or guardian consent for anyone under 18.
  • Editing support: assemble selects, rough cuts and short-form cutdowns under the direction of the editor.
  • Archiving: log, label and back up footage under a consistent naming and metadata scheme, with restricted material flagged and secured.
  • Release ethics review: check every cut against signed releases, and flag any identifying detail of a minor, a victim or a person who has asked not to be shown.

What we expect from you

  • Working knowledge of a professional editing application and of basic camera and audio practice. A portfolio is required.
  • Informed consent in practice: no one is filmed without a signed release, and anyone may withdraw before release.
  • Trauma-informed interview support: no pressure to disclose, a pause whenever one is asked for, and respect for what a subject chooses not to say.
  • Confidentiality of unreleased footage. Nothing is shared, posted or kept on personal devices or accounts.
  • A cleared background check and safeguarding training, because productions can involve young people.
  • Care with equipment and with the time of everyone on set.

What you will gain

  • Work on documentary productions intended for public release, with production credit where your contribution warrants it.
  • Practical training in release management and documentary ethics.
  • Portfolio pieces from approved short-form work, with permission.
  • A written evaluation at the close of the term and, on successful completion, a professional reference from your supervisor.

Deliverables

  • A logged, backed-up footage archive for at least one production, with a metadata guide.
  • A release audit for one project that matches every identifiable person on screen to a signed release.
  • At least two edited short-form pieces approved for release.
  • A final reflection on the ethics of representation in documentary work.
