The Weariness Under the Weariness

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Galatians 6:9 KJV

Or read it here

There are two kinds of tired. One comes from the work. The other comes from what we were quietly expecting the work to pay us.

Paul knew the difference. The word he uses in Galatians 6:9 for growing weary carries the sense of losing heart, of the inside caving in while the outside keeps moving. And the phrase "if we faint not" pictures something coming loose, like a bowstring that has gone slack. He is describing people who are still showing up but have started to come apart.

Look at the verse just before it. "He that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption." Paul places our weariness right next to the question of motive. That placement is deliberate. A lot of what we call burnout is the bill coming due on good work done for the wrong reasons.

Be honest about the ledger you keep. Some of us serve so we can be seen serving. Some of us mentor because being needed quiets an old voice that says we are not enough. Some of us fight injustice because anger feels better than grief. None of that is visible on a résumé. All of it is visible to God, and the body eventually tells the truth about it. When the applause stops, or the young man you poured into goes back to the block, the hidden contract breaks, and the exhaustion that follows is deeper than any long week.

Our culture runs on that contract. Ministries, nonprofits and movements burn through good people every year because we built them on adrenaline, platform and outrage. Those fuels burn hot and fast. The harvest Paul promises comes "in due season," literally in its own time, and none of those fuels last that long.

Jesus did good for thirty years before anyone wrote it down. He healed people and told them to keep quiet about it. He washed the feet of the man He knew would sell Him out. Hebrews says He endured the cross "for the joy that was set before him." His fuel was the Father's pleasure and the people He came to save. That is why He never ran out.

He is also the answer for the part of you that has been running on the wrong fuel. You do not need to feel guilty about being tired. You need to bring the hidden motive into the light, let Him forgive it, and let Him give you a better reason to keep going. Sowing to the Spirit starts there.

The field is still there in the morning. So is the season God has set. Go back to it with clean hands.

Pray

Father, You know why I really do what I do. Show me the reward I have been secretly working for, and forgive me for it. Be my reason. Let me serve when nobody sees and keep going when nothing changes, because You are pleased and because these people are Yours. In Jesus' name, amen.

Practice

Do one good thing today that no one will ever find out about. Notice what it feels like when nobody thanks you.

Carry

Change the fuel, and the fire lasts.
